History
Waxhaw Indians prospered for ages before the first settlers from Germany, England, Wales and Scotland arrived to the area. After serving in the Revolutionary War, a man named Reuben Boswell moved to what is now Weddington. Boswell’s grandson, Reuben B. Weddington, became a prominent citizen who donated funds to build the Methodist Episcopal Church. His donations to the church and its affiliated school led the church to change its name to Weddington Methodist Church. The community that grew up around the church inherited his name over time.
The community was primarily an agricultural area until the 1970s, when Charlotte started experiencing rapid growth. In 1983, fearing annexation by Charlotte, the town officially incorporated as Weddington.
