History
Waxhaw takes its name from the Waxhaw Indian tribe, originally called the Wysacky, that once inhabited the land. The town dates back to the 1700s, but was officially chartered in 1889, making it the oldest town in Union County. Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, was born nearby, although both Carolinas claim him, due to the town’s proximity to the border.
The railroad arrived to the area in the year 1888, and tracks were laid directly through town. This development brought new growth to the town, as it became connected to Atlanta and other major cities for commerce purposes. Like with many towns in the Carolinas, the textile industry played a major role in the development of Waxhaw between the late 1800s and 1940s.
Waxhaw remained a quiet town until the 2000s, when the banking industry boomed in Charlotte, and the small town became a desirable suburb for Charlotte workers. Today, the past is well-preserved in its historic downtown district, which holds several buildings from the 1880s.
